After writing "The Onyx Box" and a few months playing with the new Sequencing
Package ( Cakewalk ) I decided to work on another "Big project". The tune
I was working out Became NEXUS PART 1, which I wrote for Alison ( Who
I am now married to ).
From there I spent the next 2 years writing another 60 minutes of instrumental
music based on the same melody which featured in Part 1.
This is my favorite work to date and I hope anyone who finds the time
to download it will enjoy it too...
Available Downloads
Nexus 1 - Her Tears (not available)
The tune that was written for Alison's
21st birthday. This track inspired the all of the tracks on the CD but
was not featured on the CD itself.
Nexus 2 - Nexus Overture (5Mb
128kbs 44kHz)
The first track on the Nexus CD which
contains the main Nexus theme. It is presented almost like a song, in
that there are no unpredictable changes in there, and the progression
is easy to follow.
Nexus 3 - In The Rain (3Mb
128kbs 44kHz)
Continuing with the sparkly feel of the
first track, Nexus 3 started out as a backing track to a love song some
one wanted me to do some music for. The love song was dropped and the
music was re-jigged to fit the 'Nexus' theme. The end result is a short
but vibrant piece, and is definitely one of the highlights of Nexus.
Nexus 4 - Strange World (5.4Mb
128kbs 44kHz)
This track takes Nexus into a different
mood, with it's dark and heavily sequenced opening. The start of this
track is almost like something from a horror film. It later begins to
progress into an intricate piece of music containing multiplication's
of overlapping note sequences but still managing to retain the overall
melody. About half way through the nightmarish first section it opens
up into a dream like surreal but lighter mood which contains another
re working of the Nexus main theme, combined with the exact sequence
found in the nightmarish section but with a much lighter backing. Hope
you like it :-)
Nexus 5 - Tumble Down (available soon)
This track never made it to the final
CD, not because I didn't like it... but more... it didn't offer anything
that hadn't already been said in Nexus 2,3,4
Nexus 6 - The Lake
This track probably took the longest to
do. It started out as a rhythm scribbled down on some music paper. The
rhythm was then layered down as the Marimba Track, which then became
the backbone for the rest of the track. The track is split into 3 downloads,
one for each sub part and each lasting about 6 - 7 minutes.
Nexus 7 - Saturn (1.5Mb 56kbs 44kHz)
(extract)
I got about two thirds the way through
this track and stopped writing it because it didn't fit into what I
was trying to do with Nexus. This track may re appear re-egineered as
a Cold Coffee 2 album track.
Nexus 8 - Through Waking Eyes
This is the longest track on the CD running
for about 35 mins. There are a number of sections to this track and it
was an absolute nightmare to write using Cakewalk 3.11. Nexus 8 unlike
the other tracks introduces its own theme, separate from the rest of Nexus,
and was conceived during writing Nexus 4. I layed down a quick track so
that I wouldn't forget the idea and then continued with the rest of Nexus.
As I was writing all the other Nexus tracks things would come out of the
woodwork by accident and if I liked it, they would be filed away for later.
Nexus 8 is almost entirely built those bits of ideas all arranged around
a common Nexus 8 theme, some new short lived themes and towards the end
the main Nexus 8 theme finds it's self entwined with the Main Nexus (2),
theme for the finale. This track is what Nexus was all about...
A period in life when so much was changing, and music was the only retreat.
I hope anyone who downloads this track will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed
the experience of writing it.
